     Polished concrete - Shows surface micro-scratches show acutely under raking light; protection needs to address fine particle contamination under foot traffic

     Luxury vinyl tile - It is more resilient than stone or hardwood but still vulnerable to point loading from equipment legs and heavy impacts

The Characteristics That Actually Matter in Floor Protection

Good floor protection shares certain non-negotiable qualities regardless of floor type:

     Non-slip on both faces - Has protection that creates a slip hazard on a working site is worse than no protection

     Compressive strength - Includes panels that crush under equipment weight stop protecting immediately

     Secure joining - Get gaps between panels leave edges exposed; shifting panels create trip hazards

     Clean removal - Have adhesive residue or surface marking on removal undoes the protection's entire purpose

The Financial Logic

Run the numbers for the specific floor type on your project. For premium hardwood, natural stone, or high-end tile, remediation or replacement costs dwarf the cost of floor protection during construction by multiples. For polished concrete or custom tile work, the timeline disruption of floor repair is often worse than the direct cost.

Floor protection is one of the few construction site expenses where the return on investment is essentially certain. The only variable is whether you realise it before or after something goes wrong.
